Wii Fit was launched in Japan at the beginning of December 2007 and it was an immediate hit, selling almost 1.8 million copies in the first four months. It was then released in the UK on the 25th April 2008 and almost immediately topped the UK gaming charts. Within days, retailers had sold all of their initial stock allocations and it was estimated that over 200,000 copies of Wii Fit were sold within the first week. In fact, one high street chain claimed to be shifting 90 copies a minute on launch day. Wii Fit is scheduled for launch in Australia on the 8th May 2008 and in the US on the 19th May 2008.
The Wii Fit's $89.99 price tag is justified by the wide range of exercises it includes. The exercises are grouped under four different training modes: strength training, yoga, aerobics and balance games. The strength training category offers a series of extensions, lifts (arm and leg), squats, twists, lunges, planks and more. Meanwhile, the yoga category coaches users through a variety of different positions and breathing exercises, and aerobics allows players to do stepping, rhythm boxing and even hula-hoop challenges. Wii Fit's balance games include heading a soccer ball, walking a tight rope, doing ski jumps and more. When a person starts an exercise, a trainer (designed by the user) appears on screen. Throughout each exercise, the trainer provides the user with personalized feedback. All of the games and exercises utilize the balance board in some way, so the system (and your trainer) can tell exactly what you are doing and how you are doing it.
The physical benefits of Wii gaming for children is a disputed point. Wii provides more exercise than traditional gaming of course but should not encompass a child's complete exercise regimen. It is recommended that a child receive at least 60 combined total minutes of exercise everyday. While playing Wii for 60 minutes a day would be more beneficial than watching television or playing a traditional video or computer game it should not substitute traditional play all together.
